Copyright China Daily Oct 13, 1999A NATIONWIDE project designed to improve the educational level of teachers in China's remote rural areas has been implemented.
The project, co-sponsored by China Youth Development Fund and China Central Radio and TV University, seeks to train 10,000 teachers from Project Hope schools and remote rural areas through so-called "distance education" in the next five years.
Using colour televisions and video compact discs (VCDs) to transmit educational materials, participating teachers will be taught in local branches of the radio and TV university. They can acquire junior college certificates if they complete the required courses within eight years.
In addition to being part of classes linked by TV and VCDs, the project's participants will be able to voice their opinions in letters to their professors in Beijing.
