Chapter 1 - Basic Conversation Skills

Face to Face

Your child needs to see your face when you are talking with him/her so that all non-verbal information of the conversation is available. Face to face positions help to show the child that you are sharing their interest and attention. Face to face positions will help you get all the information you need about what your child is trying to communicate so you can use the words that your child needs and will use.

1. Sit close enough to your child so you can touch.

2. Stay at a level where your child can easily look you in the eye.

  • Kneel down
  • Lift him/her up
  • Lay on your tummy on the floor

3. Look at your child's face when he/she talks to you.

4. Touch your child to get him/her to look at you.

5. Touch your child so he/she knows you are listening and understanding.
