Chapter 1 - Basic Conversation Skills

How to Have a Good Conversation with your Child

A good conversation with your child will feel good to both of you. There will be the feeling that you both want to stay and talk. You will be sharing ideas that interest your child and that will teach him/her more language. There are several things that you can do to help develop good conversations.

  • Listen to what might child say to me
  • Answer my child with words that he/she will understand
  • Use words that describe what he/she is talking about
  • Wait and Listen to see if my child says something else to me
  • Respond to what my child says
  • Ask myself how the conversation felt:
    • How long did we talk?
    • What did we talk about?
    • Did I listen to my child?
    • Did I respond to my child said?
    • How did my child seem to feel about the conversation?
