Chapter 1 - Basic Conversation Skills

Paying Attention

Your child needs words to express his/her own ideas. He/she will most easily use words that express the ideas in which he/she is interested. When you pay attention to what your child is doing and trying to say, you will be able to model those words. Both of you will be more successful in your conversations.

  1. Follow your child's interests - Listen and Watch.
  2. Talk about what your child wants to talk about.
  3. Pay attention to what your child is paying attention to
  4. When you change the subject, help your child change his/her focus with touch, eye contact, gentle language.
  5. Use your voice to show them you are interested
