Chapter 1 - Basic Conversation Skills

Teaching Words

The words you use in your conversations with your child can help language development. When you use words that your child needs at that time, he/she is more likely to learn to use them.

  1. Use words that your child can understand.
  2. Use words that talk about what he/she is doing.
  3. Give your child plenty of time to talk.
  4. Use the words that you are teaching in many different ways

Examples

I found a ball!
It's a really big ball.
We can sit on the ball.
Do you want me to throw the ball?
What could we do with this ball?
This ball is hers.

You will learn more about using words to teach in Chapter 4 - Talk that Teaches
