Chapter 1 - Basic Conversation Skills

What is Conversation?

A conversation is not just words. A conversation also involves face to face availability, eye contact, shared attention, and partners responding to ideas. Conversations provide a place for your child to learn how to use different kinds of words and how to use those words to do different things. Conversations that help your child will be pleasant for both of you.

A conversation needs at least five things:

  1. At least two people
  2. A shared interest
  3. Talking
  4. Listening
  5. Answering

Conversation has verbal and non-verbal parts.
Conversation provides background and communication.
Conversation provides a situation for learning language.
Good conversation is satisfying.
In a good conversation both you and your child get some information and pleasure.
