Chapter 10 - Managing Behavior

Using Clear and Specific Language

An instruction needs to be stated in a clear, obvious, specific way. It needs to give information that is relevant and fitting to the task. In other words, Be brief, to the point, and clear.

Examples

Wordy/Unclear
To the Point
You say: "Well, it's noon and I suppose that means you oughta eat lunch." You say: "It's time to come to the table for lunch."
You say: "I need to get you to school on time today so you'd better get everything ready and get into the car so we can go." You say: "Get your books and get in the car for school."
