Chapter 10 - Managing Behavior

Have my Child's Attention FIRST!

Make sure you use your child's name and make eye contact with him/her before giving an instruction. You might have to walk over to where he/she is and get to his/her level to do this.

Examples

No Attention Attention and Eye Contact
Your child is running around the room and you give him/her an instruction. You gently tap your child on the shoulder and get eye contact, then you give him/her an instruction.

Your child is deeply into a movie, and you tell him from the doorway that it's time for bed so get his/her pajamas on now.

Your child is deeply into a movie, so you walk over to him/her, use his/her name, wait till he/she looks at you and clearly tell him/her to get ready in 5 minutes.
