Chapter 10 - Managing Behavior

What makes good instruction? Key Behaviors for me to learn.

There are 12 key behaviors for you to practice so that you can give 'good' instructions.

The 12 behaviors are:

  1. I will use language that is easy for the child to understand.
  2. I will be clear and specific.
  3. I will state the instruction positively.
  4. I will give my child no more than one or two steps.
  5. I will give the instruction when I'm sure I have my child's attention.
  6. I will allow an appropriate amount of time after my instruction so that my child has the chance to cooperate.
  7. I will give the instruction no more than twice.
  8. I will give instructions that matter, and that I really need my child to do.
  9. I will give feedback and labeled praise when my child cooperates.
  10. I will help my child cooperate if he/she does not cooperate on his/her own.
  11. I will give an instruction only when I'm willing to follow through if my child does not cooperate.
  12. I will practice instructions during changes in play times with my child.

We will now look at each of the 12 steps to 'good' instruction
