Chapter 10 - Managing Behavior

Guiding to Cooperation

What if your child doesn't cooperate after two times? You can provide guidance and support to help him/her do what you ask. You praise the child as he/she cooperates even though it is with your help.

Example

No Cooperation and No Help Guided Cooperation

You say: 'Bring me your shoe.'

Your child runs away and you get angry.

You say: 'Bring me your shoe.'

Your child runs away.

You give the instruction the second time.

Your child doesn't cooperate within 5 seconds.

You go to your child, put your hands over his/hers and guide him/her to the shoe and give it to him/her. You pick up the shoe together and say:

'Thank you for giving me your shoe.'
