Chapter 10 - Managing Behavior

Practice in Play

Practice giving clear, specific, important instructions during play. Give them when it's time to make changes because that's when really important instructions are needed. Instructions should be given only when necessary. Remember to do everything you have learned to do up until now:

  • Listening
  • Responding
  • Playing
  • Taking Turns
  • Praising

When you give instructions, remember:

  • An Instruction Should Be Short, Clear And Positive
  • The Rule Of Two
  • Be Sure To Follow Through
  • Praise Cooperation (Even If It's Guided)

Try to pay attention to instructions you give your child. Write them down. Observe whether or not your child cooperated. Think about why or why not. Pay attention to what you say or do afterwards too.
