Chapter 10 - Managing Behavior

Stated No More Than Two Times

The instruction should be stated no more that two times before you follow through with your appropriate response. We call this the Rule of Two

Example

Too Many Times and No Time to Cooperate Stated Two Times with Wait Time
You say all of this without stopping: "Bring me your shoe. Go get your shoe now. Didn't you hear me? I said for you to get up and go get your shoe now."

You give the instruction the 1st time: "Bring me your shoe." (You give your child at least 5 seconds to begin to move toward the shoe - but he/she doesn't move)

You give the instruction the second time: "Bring me your shoe."
