Chapter 11 - Ignoring Problem Behavior

Obvious Ignoring

Ignoring works best when you are obvious.

To be obvious about ignoring a behavior you should completely turn around with your back to your child. You shield your eyes with your hands if you need to. Be sure to check on your child out of the corner of your eye, or through your fingers if necessary. Do not talk to your child, do not laugh, or giggle, or even smile. Be detached. The purpose is to completely take your attention away from your child and his/her behavior at that time.

You will ignore the behavior (and your child) until the undesirable behavior stops or begins to disappear.
