Chapter 13 - More Than Praise: Time In - Time Out

Introduction

This final chapter will addresses more ways to manage difficult behavior in positive ways. The strategies discussed in previous chapters continue to be important:

  • Maintain a positive environment for your child.
  • Continue to use methods that teach your child new language and 'good' behavior.
  • Say what you mean.
  • Follow through.
  • Be consistent.

Now you will learn about effective 'time-in' and 'time-out' methods.

You have learned in previous chapters how to arrange the environment; establish rules; use instructions; ignore to teach; and, to use praise, attention and rewards.
