Chapter 2 - Taking Turns

HOMEWORK:

Observing other people talking with my child.

Does Turn-taking Really Matter?

Each day for a week watch your child interact with someone important in his/her life. If possible, videotape yourself with your child. Use a chart like the one below Print out a copy of the chart. In the child column, mark each time your child takes a talking turn. In the 'partner' column, mark each time the other person takes a talking turn. In the 'behavior' column, describe your child's behavior during the conversation (happy, sad, attentive, tired, uninterested, equally talkative)

Ask yourself the following questions each time:

  • Did my child enjoy the conversation?
  • Did the conversation seem balanced?
  • Did my child talk a lot?
  • Did my child seem interested in the topic?
  • Did my child act properly?
  • How much did the partner talk or not?
  • Did that seem to affect how much my child talked?
