Chapter 3 - Encouraging Conversations

Being Positive in Conversations With Your Child

When your child is learning language, he/she needs to feel positive support in conversations. The conversations they have with you should feel good to you both. Both of you need to feel that you are benefiting from the conversation. You can assist this process by paying attention to how you talk to your child, how you answer his/her questions, and how encouraging you are even when he/she is not perfectly clear.

There are several ways that you can respond to your child in conversation to develop language, to support your child in new knowledge, and to encourage more sharing.
