Chapter 4 - Talk That Teaches

Knowing Parts of Language

It is important to use specific words from each category rather than non-specific words: For more information about using Specific Words visit Chapter 3 - Words that Teach. The following are some examples of general and specific.

Lables (Nouns)

General Specific
"Here it is" "Here's the ball"
"Give me that" "Give me the shoe"
"He's going to jump" "Sparky's going to jump"
"That's a big one" "That's a big horse"
"I need these" "I need these markers"

Action Words (Verbs)

General Specific
"Go" "run boy"
"Go" "push the car"
"Go" "swimming"

Describing Words (Adjectives and Adverbs)

General Specific
"wow" "big truck"
"pretty" yellow flower"
"man-oh-man" "fast horse"
"mmmmm" "soft"

Words that tell "Where" (prepositions)

General Specific
"over there" "in the toybox"
"here" "on my plate"
"there" "under the table"
"here" "over the picture"
