Chapter 4 - Talk That Teaches

Using "Target" Language

"Target" language is language that is "right on target" for your child. It is words and sentences that your child needs at a particular time in their development. The more words your child learns and then uses, the better he/she will be able to communicate. He/she also needs to know all kinds of words to be able to do well as he/she enters school.

The most important types of words for your child to learn are

Labels (nouns)
Ball, car, toy, house, baby, shoe, toes, house

Action Words (verbs)
Run, go, see, talk, swim, play, make, cook

Words that describe objects and actions (adjectives and adverbs)

  • Colors
  • Size (big, little)
  • Texture (hard, soft, rough, smooth, gooey)
  • Temperature (hot, cold, warm)

Words that tell where an object is (prepositions)
On, off, up, under, over, in, out
