Chapter 5 - Praising Your Child

Labeled Praise

At least three things happen when you give your child labeled praise or specific feedback about the good things they do.

  1. He/she will know exactly what he/she did that you liked.
  2. When your child knows what he/she did that you liked, he/she will probably do it again to get your attention and approval. Their good behavior will increase!
  3. Your child will hear specific words and descriptions that will help them learn language for later on.

Examples

When your child picks up his/her toys to put away:

"Good job putting the blocks on the shelf!"
"I like the way you put all the crayons in the box!"
"I'm so happy you put your dolls in their beds!"
"You did a good job putting the playdough in the pot!"
"Thank you for pushing the wagon under the table!"

When your child follows your directions:

"Thank you for coming in the house so quickly!"
"I like how you washed your hands for lunch!"
"Your room looks great because you put your clothes in the drawers!"
"I'm happy that you turned the TV off!"
