Chapter 6 - Questions that Teach

How Many Questions Should You Ask?

Too many questions all at once will make a conversation with your child feel unbalanced. When you are asking all the questions, it might seem to your child that you are directing the conversation and he/she is only answering. Good conversations have turn-taking balance where both of you have a chance to start talking about ideas. It is important for your child to have many opportunities to begin conversations too, so try to keep your questions to a minimum. During any interaction, probably five questions is enough.
