Chapter 6 - Questions that Teach

KidWork: Homework for the KidTalk Parent

Questions that Teach: How does this make a difference for my child?

Notice how the kinds of questions adults ask your child make a difference to your child's answers. Try to watch two different adults talking to your child sometime this week. Maybe you could watch your child's teacher or child care worker; a neighbor; a grandparent; an aunt or uncle, with your child.

Listen for questions and decide whether the questions are "open" or "closed". Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Did the question encourage talking from your child or only a one word answer?
  • How did your child answer the question?
After you watch your child with two adults, practice asking questions yourself. Good times to ask questions are in the car; at mealtimes; at bathtime; at bedtime. Answer the same questions you asked before. Fill out the chart below.
