Chapter 7 - Expanding Language

Why Is Expanding Language Important For My Child's Development?

Expansions are important because they let your child know that you heard and understood him/her. Expanding also lets your child hear more words about the topic, and get more information about the topic he/she is interested in. We know your child is interested when he/she initiates the topic. When you expand his /her statement about their topics you connect his/her thoughts and talking with even more words. Your child will probably store that information about more words to express that idea and be more likely to use those words later. This is how he/she will learn to use more kinds of words and longer sentences. Remember to stay just ahead of your child, not too many more words. Remember to say things about what your child is talking about.
