Commenting

Commenting is a way to create teaching opportunities by describing what your child has, sees, or does (parallel talk) or what you have, see or are doing (self talk). When using commenting, it is important to that you and your child are paying attention to the same thing. You should wait until both you and your child have a joint focus, that you are looking at or playing with the same object or activity before you use Commenting. It is easy to forget that a child is learning new words and may not yet know what the words mean or what the words are describing. So, when using Commenting, try to make it clear what you are describing. If you are both looking at the same thing, you can touch it or point to it. You can use your voice to emphasize the name of the thing or to name what you are doing.
