Limited Access

Limited Access is a way to create a teaching opportunity by placing desirable objects out of reach or in a closed container or temporarily blocking your child from participating in desirable activity. Limited Access might mean setting things up by putting materials out of physical reach, such as in the center of the table, or out of social reach by putting the materials under someone else's control. Each instance will require the child to ask someone in order to get access to the materials.

It is very important that you only use this in a temporary way. If your child becomes upset or distressed when you try Limited Access, you should immediately switch to a different way to create a teaching opportunity. Limited Access as a teaching opportunity should NEVER be used to punish your child or force your child to try and try and try again! Using these techniques does not guarantee that the child will show interest or initiate interactions. It is important that you do not force teaching opportunities.
