Nonverbal Help

Nonverbal Help Example 1

Skill: Heather needs to learn to Use the Sign Language for the word 'More'.
Heather and her mother are together.
She wants to have another piece of cookie.
She holds out her hand and points to the counter.
Her mother provides nonverbal help by gesturing as if to suggest, "What do you want?" and then using an expectant look.
Heather signs 'more'.
The result is that Heather gets more cookie.
The natural reward is that Heather gets to eat the cookie.

Nonverbal Help Example 2

Skill: Kevin needs to learn to Wash His Hands Independently.
Kevin and his teacher are together.
Kevin is at the sink and needs some soap.
He does not reach for the soap.
His teacher provides nonverbal help by pointing and tapping on the soap dispenser.
Kevin reaches for the soap and puts some on his hands.
The result is he completes the task.
The natural reward is that his hands are clean and he can go to the snack table.
